Temporary Advancement
Guidance on Selecting Staff for Temporary Advancement

An assessment of suitability must be made by someone at least one grade or payband higher than the post being filled. This may be achieved by:
  • Awarding TA to an individual who already provides cover on an ad hoc basis and/or has the experience of the specific post (this may apply particularly for a specialist post) or


  • Awarding TA from staff who have been accredited for promotion and are awaiting a posting or


  • Advertising locally to those with an avenue of promotion or progression to the grade or payband and assessing through a formal or informal selection process or


  • Advertising outside of the local establishment or group where there are likely to be little or no eligible/competent candidates locally.
