Managed Appointments
To deploy staff on level transfer, progression, promotion or on compassionate grounds to meet local operational and business needs. The vacancy is therefore not advertised.
Minimum posting period
Jobs may be advertised with the expectation that the successful applicant will remain in the post and not apply to transfer else where in the Service for a predetermined period of time (this does not preclude applying for promotion or compassionate transfer)
Mobility
The requirement for individuals in specified grades to be liable for redeployment to any post within the Prison Service in the grade they are employed
MSSU
Management Selection and Support Unit
National Contract for Temporary Agency Staff
A central framework agreement with approved contractors for the supply of agency staff
Progression
Progression is the term used to describe movement up the paybands within a grade
Promotion
Promotion is the term used to describe movement up a grading structure
PSJIC
Prison Service Joint Industrial Council
Prison Service Trade Union Side (PSTUS)
Group of recognised trade unions comprising Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), First Division Association (FDA) and Institution of Professionals, Managers and Specialists (IPMS), for whom there are separate consultation arrangements
Regrading
Transfer to a new substantive grade at broadly the same level but in a different grading structure. Regrading can include transfer to a new substantive grade at a lower level (also known as 'downgrading')

The maximum timescale for releasing successful candidates to take up post
Reserve List
The merit list from a selection exercise that may be used to fill further similar vacancies within a specified period
