Vacancy Advertising Scheme (VAS)
Advertising Posts Using the VAS

All posts must be advertised except where a Managed Appointment is appropriate. Posts for which only Prison Service staff will be eligible, e.g. operational grades, are advertised within the Prison Service only.

For all other posts, the vacancy must be advertised in the Ministry of Justice Jobs Bulletin. Wider advertising to other government departments can help attract a wider pool of applicants, particularly where specialist skills are required.

Criteria identified at the start of the vacancy advertising process must form the basis of selection decisions. To ensure that essential information, in particular eligibility requirements, is included in the advertisement, standard templates are available. To access these and further advice on advertising click here.

Restriction on further transfer for the successful applicant may be applied and stated in the advertisement. This is normally limited to three years but does not prevent the individual applying for progression or promotion or a compassionate transfer.

Requirement for JSAC accreditation must be stated where applicable. Requesting annual staff reports is optional but must be stated in the advertisement if required.
