Before beginning the process for filling Chaplain posts Governors should consider the resource needs for both specific faiths and provision of generic chaplaincy duties. Governors should also assess the type of appointment required - click here for guidance on whether work needs to be covered by a contract of employment or a sessional arrangement. For further guidance on steps to be taken before initiating procedures to appoint a chaplain please click here.
The options for appointing a Chaplain may be covered by:
- A contract of employment through external recruitment
- Managed appointment of existing staff without advertising.
- Transfer on level transfer of existing staff in the same payband within Vacancy Advertising Scheme (VAS) arrangements.
- Offering work on a sessional fee paid basis (this procedure would also apply where a voluntary unpaid arrangement applies).
The recruitment of all full time Payband 1 Chaplains is centrally managed through national recruitment - contact the Headquarters Personnel Team on 020 7217 2800/6563. Chaplaincy HQ will work with establishments to fill vacancies from those accredited through the national campaign.
Further guidance on advertising and filling Chaplain posts, including part time posts, those in Payband 2 and scope for level transfer, is contained in the Filling Vacancies website
Further advice regarding the general recruitment of Chaplains can sought be from the Headquarters Personnel Team. Advice on other Chaplain related queries should be sought from your Area Chaplain.
